Children ages 5 – 13 enjoy comradery while they learn basic techniques of sport Sambo. Various ages are grouped together; as such an approach serves to compliment instruction from the teachers in the form of reciprocal cooperation. Younger children learn from the older kids, while the older ones reinforce their understanding through helping the younger ones.
Essential skills such as coordination, balance and kinesthetic awareness are developed. Self control and focus are emphasized and self esteem/ confidence increases as a result of mastery of technique through focus. Physical fitness is a major part of the program; with the warm up consisting of cardiovascular activities, flexibility enhancement and strengthening. Children are taught the principals of throws/ takedowns; striking (with targets) and grappling fundamentals.
There is a competition team for those children wishing to compete in regional, state and national Sambo and Grappling events. Inclusion on the team is by Master’s invitation and minimum age is eight years old (exceptions may apply). Competition is a healthy way for children to test their skills and identify areas which may need work. Focusing skills are enhanced and competitors learn to concentrate attention internally to the task at hand and “tune out” distractions. Events are typically large and the competition is strong. Children come in contact with many others and have the opportunity to broaden their horizons both athletically and culturally. Children who place in such events are nationally recognized.
